Questioning Skills
We have known for years that questioning is an important life, learning and thinking skill-set but the increasing focus on facilitating learning and thinking skills is bringing questioning into a much sharper focus for schools. Many schools are now becoming convinced that facilitating students’ questioning skills is a major aspect that their classroom programmes should be addressing. This developing focus has shown that we have very limited resources that will:
- Increase teacher’s knowledge on questioning skills
- Facilitate pupils questioning skills
- Allow pupil self assessment of their questioning
- Support teachers in assessing pupil questioning skills on an individual or school-wide basis.
This lack of quality resources has led to the development of the QuESTioning Rubric, which has been trialed in a range of schools over the last two years.

This is not a rubric of question types, rather a rubric of questioning skills.
